Cronobacter SAKAZAKI

Cronobacter sakazaki

Cronobacter is a gram negative bacteria that exist in environment, hospitals and can survive under very dry conditions. It is part of the family of the family Enterobacteriaceae. As such it can be found in dry foods like infant formula powder, milk powder, tea and starches. It can also be found in water and waste water. Cronobacter can cause bacterial sepsis and meningitis especially for infants under 2 years old. This bacteria can also cause severe symptoms for the immunocompromised and aged. Cronobacter can grow at temperatures from -5°C to 44°C but have been found to survive spray drying.

Conventional Method – Biolife Italiana

Detection of Cronobacter can be done on Biolife culture media. They grow well in non-selective as well as selective media like VRBA, Mc Conkey agar and Deoxycholate agar. Some strains produce two culture colonies; glossy and matt. 80% of strains give yellow colonies on Tryptic soy agar. Biolife has enrichment selective broth and selective chromogenic plating medium for the detection of Cronobacter sakazakii in milk and milk products, i.e. Cronobacter Selective Broth (CSB) and Chromogenic Cronobacter Isolation (CCI)

PCR Technology – SureFast® Cronobacter

Arasains supplies detection kit for Cronobacter from R-Biopharm. SureFast® Cronobacter sakazakii PLUS is a real-time PCR for the direct, qualitative detection of Cronobacter sakazakii DNA. Each reaction contains an internal amplification control (IAC). SureFast® Cronobacter PLUS is a test to detects Cronobacter spp. DNA. Each reaction contains an internal amplification control (IAC).

 Benefit:

  • Qualitative detection
  • Of common foodborne pathogens with qPCR
  • Simple and straightforward
  • Increased efficiency – multiplex kits

PCR Technology – Assurance® GDS Cronobacter

Merck Biocontrol Indonesia provides a rapid method for detection of Cronobacter spp. and C. sakazakii using the Assurance GDS. Assurance® GDS accurately detected the presence of low levels of Cronobacter sakazakii in milk and soy based infant nutritional formulas and from stainless steel surface samples

 Benefit:
