Pseudomonas
is a genus of gram negative bacteria belonging to the family pseudomonadaceae containing 191species. Biolife Indonesia supplies Biolife culture media to detect
Pseudomonas
spp. as well as
Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These bacteria are aerobic with the exception of some
Pseudomonas
that are anaerobes like those forming biofilms. These
Pseudomonas secrete exopolysaccharides to make them stick to food production surfaces and as such are difficult to remove during normal cleaning.
Pseudomonas are hardy bacteria that can thrive in many environments as they can metabolize strange substrates like soap, pharmaceuticals, fats and even quaternary ammonium compounds. As such testing them is important for pharmaceutical and food production.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
is a pathogen required for testing under USP and EP regulations.
P. aeruginosa is responsible for many illnesses in humans like keratitis (infection of the cornea), ear infections, pulmonary infections (bronchiectasis), urinary tract infections and septicemia in bloodstream. Patients with compromised immunity is especially susceptible to infections by P. aeruginosa. The success of this bacteria depends on its ability to utilize a broad spectrum of substrates and its formation of biofilms which help protect it from antibiotics. It has also a large range of pathogenicity factors to counter host defences.
During incubation of the Compact Dry PA plate, the growing colonies will develop a red coloration which is due to the integrated redox indicator die Tetrazolium salt. The differentiation to other Pseudomonas is the formation of a greenish-yellow halo surrounding the colony. Some other bacterial genera or Pseudomonas species are able to grow in some cases, but will form colourless or red colonies without the greenish-yellow halo.
