CAMPYLOBACTER

Campylobacter

Campylobacteriosis is an illness that is caused by the bacteria of the genus Campylobacter. Most of the disease is caused by the species called Campylobacter jejuni. The symptoms of this disease is diarrhea, cramps and fever within 2-5 days of infection. The diarrhea can be bloody with nausea and vomiting. This bacteria is gram negative and has a spiral shape. This disease is one of the most common cause of diarrheal outbreaks in Indonesia though it usually do not cause death and seldom reported. The most commonly reported cases of campylobacteriosis are associated with the eating of raw meat or under cooked meat or from cross contamination of other foods from these items.

Strains of this bacteria is sensitive to oxygen and thus they are difficult to cultivate and maintain. Confirmation requires microscopic, biochemical and immunological techniques that are tedious and labor intensive.

Conventional Method – Biolife Italiana

Campylobacter can be detected using Arasains Biolife culture media, ie.  Bolton broth, m-CCDA agar, Columbia blood agar, and Mueller Hinton blood agar.

Enzyme Substrate Method - Simplate® Campylobacter

Campylobacter can be enumerated using simplate. Simplate uses a proprietary binary detection technology and a patented chromogenic media formulation to provide quantitative results for thermophillic Campylobacter species Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli. Time to results is 48 hrs. The traditional reference method requires the use of 4 Campy CEFEX agar plates to analyze 1 ml sample. Simplate® Campylobacter has been validated to produce equivalent results with just a single plate.

 Benefit:

  • No media preparation
  • Faster time to result
  • Easy to interpret
  • No more serial dilution and duplicate plating
  • No spreading interference

Lateral Flow - RapidChek® Campylobacter

The RapidChek® Campylobacter test system utilizes a state of the art sensitive lateral flow device and proprietary aerobic enrichment media that needs no additional supplements. Time to result is 47 - 49 hours

 Benefit:

  • Fast and simple procedure
  • Reliable result
  • Easy resource management
